Flash rust on a boat is a common problem. Small rust spots on stainless steel, aluminum or gelcoat develop very quickly and can look messy. Fortunately, flash rust is usually superficial and easy to remove with the right approach. And you guessed it: the Skrobber Magic Eraser also comes in handy here.
What is flash rust?
Flash rust is a thin layer of rust that forms when metal particles (e.g. from grinding dust or anchors) attach themselves to other surfaces. In combination with moisture, oxidation occurs - and you see that as small, orange-brown spots.
Flash rust on gelcoat, stainless steel or aluminium? Don't panic.
Many boat owners resort to aggressive means such as acid or wire brushes. But this can lead to:
- Damage to gelcoat or paint
- Unnecessary wear and tear on metal parts
- Environmental impact, especially on open water
How to remove fly rust with the Skrobber Magic Eraser:
The Skrobber Magic Eraser is ideal for safely and effectively polishing away rust. Thanks to the micro-structure of the melamine foam, the rust comes off without scratches or damage.
Approach:
- Moisten the Skrobber with water.
- Gently rub the area with rust.
- Rinse with clean water and dry.
For stubborn stains, you can use an organic rust remover in combination with the Skrobber for an even better result.
Tip: Prevention is better than cure
- Rinse your boat regularly with fresh water.
- Polish stainless steel parts well.
- Avoid grinding metal near your boat.
